IRS possessed Stingray cellphone surveillance gear, documents reveal

The Internal Revenue Service is the latest in a growing list of US federal agencies known to have possessed the sophisticated cellphone dragnet equipment known as Stingray, according to documents obtained by the Guardian.

Invoices obtained following a request under the Freedom of Information Act show purchases made in 2009 and 2012 by the federal tax agency with Harris Corporation, one of a number of companies that manufacture the devices. Privacy advocates said the revelation “shows the wide proliferation of this very invasive surveillance technology”.

City Tries to Lowball DCPS Whistleblower Jeffrey Mills

Five years after being hired to reform the D.C. Public Schools food services program, former director-turned-whistleblower Jeffrey Mills is trying to recover what he claims is his lawful share of a multimillion dollar settlement resulting from his 2013 qui tam lawsuit against mega-vendor Chartwells-Compass Group LLC.

Mills brought evidence of vendor fraud to the attention of DCPS officials from 2010 through 2012; Chancellor Kaya Henderson fired him in 2013. He then filed a sealed complaint against Chartwells in D.C. Superior Court under the D.C. False Claims Act, and he provided a copy to the D.C. Office of the Attorney General.

Whistleblowing journalism organization WikiLeaks released a trove of former CIA Director John Brennan’s emails Wednesday afternoon. The private messages provide insight into a variety of issues, including torture, Iran, and secrecy.

Before heading the CIA in 2013, Brennan served as the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center from 2004-5 and Homeland Security Advisor from 2009-13. Although these messages are from 2007-8, they offer a glimpse into the inner workings of the U.S. government.

Homan Square revealed: how Chicago police 'disappeared' 7,000 people

Police “disappeared” more than 7,000 people at an off-the-books interrogation warehouse in Chicago, nearly twice as many detentions as previously disclosed, the Guardian can now reveal.

From August 2004 to June 2015, nearly 6,000 of those held at the facility were black, which represents more than twice the proportion of the city’s population. But only 68 of those held were allowed access to attorneys or a public notice of their whereabouts, internal police records show.

Why Is The U.S. Silently Bombing Syria's Electricity Network?

The Aleppo power plant is a 1,000 megawatt thermal plant in five units build by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry in 1995-1998. It is situated some 25 kilometers east of Aleppo city center.  During the fighting around Aleppo various electricity distribution stations were damaged and electricity in parts of the city has become scarce and unpredictable. But the main power station had so far not been hit.

Gowdy appears to accidentally release CIA source's name

House Benghazi Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy appears to have accidentally released the name of a CIA source in the midst of a back-and-forth with Democrats about how sensitive the information was and whether its presence in former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s private email account constituted a security breach.

Gowdy’s aides blamed the State Department for the disclosure, and the agency acknowledged Monday a “human error” led to a failure to delete a name from the email in question.

The email posted Sunday on the panel’s website included in one instance the name of “Mousa Kousa,” an alternative spelling of Moussa Koussa, a former Libyan government spy chief and foreign minister.

Palestinian Authority demands end to Israel's 'terrorism, incitement and summary executions'

The Palestinian Authority on Sunday launched a scathing attack on Israel, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of authorizing “summary executions” of Palestinian “civilians."

Meanwhile, PA officials said no date has been set for a meeting between PA President Mahmoud Abbas and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Kerry is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu later this week in Germany.
