Target Russia: IMF Hypocrisy on full display

Radio Free Europe

Russia's finance minister expressed concern about a possible rule change by the International Monetary Fund that would enable it to keep lending to Ukraine even if Kyiv defaults on its debt to Russia.

"Russia does not want Ukraine to be left without financial support," Anton Siluanov said on October 30, but Russia is suspicious of the "hastiness" of the rule change at the IMF.

"We are concerned that the changes in the policy of the fund are forced in the context of a very politicized issue of restructuring of the Ukrainian debt," he said.

'Gasoline on the Fire': Obama Orders Ground Troops To Syria

In a move that critics says fulfills long-held warnings of "mission creep" and amount to throwing "gasoline on a fire," the Obama administration on Friday announced that U.S. ground troops will now be deployed inside Syria.

In strategic leaks to various media outlets, the Pentagon made clear the president's plan to send approximately 50 Special Operations soldiers inside the war-torn country. Reports also note that expanded ground operations will also be taking place in neighboring Iraq.

Unnamed U.S. officials reportedly "stressed" to Reuters that the new boots-on-the-ground in Syria were "not meant to engage in front-line combat but rather to advise and assist moderate rebels."

The Next Wave: Afghans Flee To Europe in Droves

Spiegel.de

Redwan Eharai's journey ends where it began: in Afghanistan, in the city of Herat. Eharai, a 15-year-old boy, is carrying the heavy body of his mother Sima up the hill to the cemetery, together with neighbors and relatives. He and his mother had set out from Afghanistan together, headed for Germany. Now he is standing at her grave.

She died at the border between Iran and Turkey, struck in the head by a bullet fired by an Iranian police officer. Hundreds of people have now come to say their goodbyes. When she was still alive and urgently needed help, no one was there for her, says Eharai, as he looks into his mother's grave.

New Probe Reveals NSA Targeted Entire Staffs of EU Governments

A German government-sanctioned special investigation has exposed a "clear breach" of intelligence-sharing agreements—including illegal surveillance of European authorities—between the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and its German counterpart, known as the BND.

The news magazine Der Spiegel reported (German) the development on Friday, after having seen a copy of the 300-page report from former federal judge Kurt Graulich, who was appointed by Chancellor Angela Merkel in July to investigate the NSA's activities within Germany. Graulich is due to formally submit the report next week to the German Parliament.

Court says it’s legal for NSA to spy on you because Congress says it’s OK

You gotta love this twisted logic.

In May, a federal appeals court declared the National Security Agency's bulk telephone metadata collection program illegal because it wasn't authorized under the Patriot Act, as the Obama administration and its predecessor administration had maintained.

Then, in June, Congress semi-dismantled the program with the passage of the USA Freedom Act, which President Obama signed on June 2. As part of the new act, Congress authorized a spying transition period of sorts where the old tactics could continue until new laws were in place.

Wikimedia v. NSA: Another Court Blinds Itself to Mass NSA Surveillance

We all know justice is blind. But that is supposed to mean that everyone before it is treated equally, not that the justice system must close its eyes and refuse to look at important legal issues facing Americans.  Yet the government continues to convince courts that they cannot consider the constitutionality of its behavior in national security cases and, last week, in an important case for anyone who has ever used Wikipedia, another judge agreed with that position.

A federal district judge in Maryland dismissed Wikimedia v. NSA, a case challenging the legality of the NSA’s “upstream” surveillance—mass surveillance of Internet communications as they flow through the Internet backbone.

Edward Snowden praises EU parliament vote against US extradition

Edward Snowden on Thursday hailed as “extraordinary” and a “game-changer” a vote in the European parliament calling on member states to prevent his extradition to the US.

The parliament voted 285-281 to pass a largely symbolic measure, a resolution that called on European Union member states to “drop any criminal charges against Edward Snowden, grant him protection and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties, in recognition of his status as whistleblower and international human rights defender”.

Why the Delta Force Raid Video Is Pure Propaganda

The Daily Sheeple

By now you’ve probably heard about the video that surfaced last weekend, which showed a US military raid against an ISIS prison. The raid was a joint effort by Delta Force operators and Kurdish Peshmerga forces, and they managed to rescue 70 Iraqi hostages who were scheduled for execution the next day.

At least one US soldier by the name of Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler was killed in the raid, making him the first US serviceman to be killed in Iraq in nearly 4 years.

As noble as the whole affair sounds at first glance, I have admit that I had a funny feeling about the video when it first surfaced.

Anonymous 2015 Million Mask March coming Nov 5th

By Mark Wachtler

October 28, 2015. Everywhere. (ONN) It’s that time of year again. Those pesky hacker kids from Anonymous will be stepping out of cyberspace and physically marching in nearly every major city on Earth. Often acting as non-violent criminals FOR the people instead of against them, these socially and politically conscious hacktivists will be coming to a street near you next week. Will you join the festival-like global demonstration? Just think of it as a festivus for the rest of us.

Over the last few years, the famed hacker collective known as Anonymous has seen its most talented computer hackers taken out of action, decimated by arrests and imprisonment.

Senate Passes CISA, The Surveillance Bill Masquerading As A Cybersecurity Bill; Here's Who Sold Out Your Privacy

After rejecting all the good privacy amendments to CISA, the Senate has now officially passed the legislation by a 74 to 21 vote. About the only "good" news is that the vote is lower than the 83 Senators who voted for cloture on it last week. Either way, the Senate basically just passed a bill that will almost certainly be used mainly for warrantless domestic surveillance, rather than any actual cybersecurity concern.

How the FBI Could Derail Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Run

James Comey – not Bernie Sanders -- is the biggest challenge to Hillary Clinton’s presidential ambitions, a prospect that should keep the former Secretary of State up at night. The fiercely independent head of the FBI is directing the investigation into Clinton’s use of a personal email server and attendant issues raised during the Benghazi inquiry, which could lead to indictments of the former Secretary of State or her various aides.

If the probe determines that Hillary or her aides mishandled classified information or obstructed justice, her campaign will likely collapse. (Hence, the rumored possibility that Joe Biden could still emerge as a “draft” candidate.)

Federal civil rights investigation to determine if law was broken during incident captured on camera in which officer drags student from her desk

A South Carolina sheriff says he was appalled by a widely circulated video showing a police officer pulling a female high school student from her desk and dragging her across a classroom.

Richland County sheriff Leon Lott said Tuesday he “wanted to throw up” when he saw the video of the incident, which is now under investigation by the Department of Justice and the FBI as well as local police.
