Send blacklisted prof to Paris!

I'm Dr. Kevin Barrett, and I want you to help send me to Paris.

Here's the deal: While teaching Islamic Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, I was targeted by politicians for a national media witch-hunt in 2006.

Since then, I have been blacklisted from teaching in the US. I make a living, such as it is, by growing my own food, cutting my own firewood, and doing some freelance writing and broadcasting.

But thanks to generous people like you, I have been able to travel to give talks and attend conferences, even though I no longer have a university job.

Pentagon spends millions paying pro sports teams to honor soldiers at games

The Pentagon and National Guard paid professional sports teams to publicly honor soldiers at sporting events, according to a Senate oversight report released Wednesday that labeled the practice “inappropriate and frivolous.”

Since the end of 2011, the military has spent $6.8 million on sports marketing contracts, according to the report, released by Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake, both Republicans from Arizona.

“By paying for such heartwarming displays like recognition of wounded warriors, surprise homecomings and on-field enlistment ceremonies, these displays lost their luster,” the report said.

Ghost War in Syria: “There Is Bound to Be Shooting”

Syria is about to become a battleground between the United States and Russia, with the forces of NATO and the forces of Syria, Iran, and China backing the two powerhouses respectively.  Now there has been official announcement from the White House that Special Forces teams will deploy into Syria to coordinate and lead the efforts of “resistance forces.”  Such means a U.S. sponsored side that would (if equipped and capable) undertake a coup d’état of the Assad government.

The media nebulously labeled the deployment as “50 Special Operations advisors,” however, this means the U.S. Army Special Forces (Airborne), the only Special Operations units capable of deploying for long periods of time and conducting the training of foreigners as a force multiplier.

Obamacare Is Dead

National Review

Regardless of whether there is a President Cruz or a President Rubio in January 2017, regardless of the existence or size of a Republican majority in Congress, the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has failed. The grand vision of an efficient pseudo-market in health insurance under enlightened federal management — the heart of Obamacare — is not coming to pass. Obamacare, meaning the operating model that undergirded the law that Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed with great fanfare — is dead, and it will not be revived. What remains is fitful chaos. A brief refresher:

The fundamental problem with ACA is that under it, insurance ceases to be insurance.

Burn it, destroy it: Pressure builds on Blair over Chilcot report as it's revealed ministers were told to destroy key evidence which showed Iraq War was ILLEGAL

Tony Blair was rocked last night by a new crisis over Iraq after it was revealed that Ministers were told to ‘burn’ a secret document which said the war was illegal.

The Mail on Sunday has learned how Downing Street descended into panic on the eve of the war when Attorney General Lord Goldsmith told Mr Blair the conflict could be challenged under international law.

Uneven justice

Two bad shootings, two guilty cops. One family sues and gets a million dollars; the other sues and collects not a penny.

Joseph Erin Hamley, 21, was wandering lost and alone on an isolated stretch of Highway 412 near the Ozark National Forest, fumbling with the toy balls he kept in his pockets. Born with cerebral palsy, Hamley had shaved his head in solidarity with his brother, who was about to go to Iraq with the Arkansas National Guard.

The haircut gave Hamley an unfortunate resemblance to a young man who had just escaped from a prison boot camp. A passing motorist alerted the Arkansas State Police. Trooper Larry Norman raced to the scene at speeds over 100 mph, jumped out of his cruiser, aimed his shotgun at Hamley and ordered him to the ground.

Snowden surveillance revelations drive UK and US policy in opposite directions

While in the US modest attempts have been made to curb the NSA’s powers in the wake of the Edward Snowden surveillance revelations, the UK is going the other way. The British government on Wednesday published draft legislation on surveillance, its response to the documents disclosed by Snowden to the Guardian two and a half years ago revealing the scale of snooping by the NSA and its British sister agency, GCHQ. The UK’s draft bill not only consolidates in law bulk data collection but it adds even more intrusive powers. Privacy, according to polls, is less of a concern for the British than security. The draft bill runs to 180 pages but some of the most important issues are left unexplored. One of the biggest holes relates to a potential problem for US-British relations.

FHFA Head Warns Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac May Need Another Taxpayer Bailout

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are at risk of needing an injection of Treasury capital after the latter reported its first quarterly loss in four years, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency said Tuesday.

FHFA Director Mel Watt issued a statement following mortgage-finance company Freddie Mac’s $475 million third-quarter loss, its first quarterly loss in four years.

“Volatility in interest rates coupled with a capital buffer that will decline to zero in 2018 under the terms of the senior preferred stock purchase agreements with Treasury will likely make both Enterprises increasingly susceptible to the possibility of quarterly losses that could result in draws going forward,” Watt said.

The War on “Nobody Died At Sandy Hook”

Memory Hole Blog

Numerous “trolls” and “shills” have harnessed the world’s most popular retailer to attack Nobody Died at Sandy Hook, posting an array of “one star” reviews and derogatory remarks on the book’s Amazon page. The collection of essays was released October 22, edited by Prof. Jim Fetzer and author Mike Palecek, and features in-depth contributions from several academics and independent researchers.

A telling aspect of this controversy is that many of the reviewers admit they have not even read the book before submitting their review. There is the strong probability that this is part of a more elaborate organized campaign led by the well-heeled parties that have directly benefited from the false event.

U.S. Brings Dogfighters to Counter Russians Over Syria

The U.S. Air Force is deploying to Turkey up to a dozen jet fighters specializing in air-to-air combat—apparently to help protect other U.S. and allied jets from Russia’s own warplanes flying over Syria.

Officially, the deployment of F-15C Eagle twin-engine fighters to Incirlik, Turkey—which the Pentagon announced late last week—is meant to “ensure the safety” of America’s NATO allies, Laura Seal, a Defense Department spokesperson, told The Daily Beast.

That could mean that the single-seat F-15s and the eight air-to-air missiles they routinely carry will help the Turkish air force patrol Turkey’s border with Syria, intercepting Syrian planes and helicopters that periodically stray into Turkish territory.

Fisa courts stifle the due process they were supposed to protect. End them

by Chelsea E Manning

The US intelligence community is in a very poor position to be trusted with protecting civil liberties while engaging in intelligence work. When you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail; when you’re a skilled intelligence professional, everything looks like a vital source for collection.

Members of the intelligence community are, it’s true, under immense stress to prevent a devastating national catastrophe. I understand a little of how that feels: while working as an analyst in Iraq, thousands of military personnel, contractors and local civilians were dependent on our ability to effectively understand the threats we were facing, and to explain them to US military commanders, the commanders of Iraqi forces and the civilian leadership of both nations.

Snowden's favorite secure chat services unite in one Android app

Engadget

Want to keep your text and voice chats truly private, the way NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden does? You'll want to try Open Whisper Systems' Signal for Android, then. The newly launched, Snowden-approved app merges OWS' existing RedPhone and TextSecure products into a single client -- you can communicate over an end-to-end encrypted connection without having to switch apps as you switch formats.

The code is open source, too, so you can verify that there aren't any government back doors. It's really just an amalgam of features you've seen before, but it could make a big difference if you're determined to keep your conversations away from prying eyes.

Pentagon spent $43m on 'world's most expensive gas station' in Afghanistan

The US Department of Defense spent nearly $43m on a gas station in northern Afghanistan and has been unable to explain why it cost so much, according to a congressionally mandated inspector.

The Pentagon “charged the American taxpayers $43m for what is likely to be the world’s most expensive gas station”, said John Sopko, head of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (Sigar) on Monday. The amount was spent between 2011 and 2014 on construction and initial implementation of the station.

Russian plane 'broke up in air' before Sinai crash

A Russian airliner that crashed in Egypt, killing all 224 people on board, broke up in the air, a Russian aviation official has said.

Viktor Sorochenko, an official with the Intergovernmental Aviation Committee, speaking after inspecting the crash site on the Sinai peninsula, said it was too early to talk about conclusions from the crash, Russian news agencies reported.

A militant group affiliated to Islamic State in Egypt claimed responsibility for bringing down the Kogalymavia Airbus A321 on Saturday “in response to Russian airstrikes that killed hundreds of Muslims on Syrian land”.

Nearly Half of Obamacare Co-Ops Are Closing

Nearly half of the 23 non-profit insurance plans created under Obamacare in 2011 at a cost of $2.4 billion have announced they will close by the end of the year.

Utah’s Arches Health Plan on Tuesday became the 10th health insurance co-op to announce that it was closing its doors. The move comes soon after the Obama administration’s decision on Oct. 1 to provide just 12.6 percent of the $2.87 billion that insurers were seeking to offset losses caused by unexpectedly high coverage costs.

That decision -- to decimate funding of a “risk corridor” program designed to reimburse insurers hammered by excessive losses due to a disproportionate share of very sick or elderly enrollees -- is triggering a mass exit of these co-ops from the market.

Stingray phone surveillance tools can also record your calls

It looks like the Stingray tools law enforcement agencies have been using to track cellphones are even worse than we thought. They also have the ability to record your calls and access your text communications, according to Justice Department documents obtained by the ACLU. As Wired points out, that's something privacy advocates have long suspected, but these documents are the first to prove that. To refresh, Stringray devices are used by law enforcement to mimic cell towers and trick nearby phones into connecting to them, which gives up their locations. The documents note that you can also use the devices to wirelessly flash a phone's firmware and use a cellphone as a bug.
