UNICEF says 'city of children' Rafah, must not be invaded

GENEVA, Tuesday, May 7, 2024 (WAFA) – James Elder, spokesman for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), said that the Israeli military attack on the city of Rafah in southern Gaza "will greatly complicate the delivery of aid" to the Strip, warning of famine if the city crossing is closed for a long period.

Elder added in a press conference held today at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, that the Rafah crossing is “the entry point for most aid into Gaza, and the Israeli military attack will greatly complicate the process of delivering aid.”

He confirmed, "If the Rafah crossing is closed for a long period, it is difficult to see how famine in Gaza can be avoided."

Elder pointed out that “Rafah is a children’s city, and it must not be invaded,” as more than half of Gaza’s children live there.

Earlier morning, the Israeli occupation forces control the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing and stopped the flow of aid to the Gaza Strip.
