Costs of responding to Ebola adding up

King 5

The American public's initial response to the spread of Ebola to the USA was fear.

Their next reaction may be sticker shock, especially if taxpayers are asked to pick up much of the tab.

Treating Ebola patients at U.S. hospitals cost $25,000 to $50,000 a day. While some hospitals say they will absorb that cost themselves, others are looking to Washington to reimburse them for expenses not covered by insurance.

Omaha's Nebraska Medical Center still hasn't been reimbursed for the $1.16 million cost of caring for its first two Ebola patients Richard Sacra and Ashoka Mukpo, said Jeffrey Gold, chancellor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

2,500 new documents ID'd in White House-IRS taxpayer harassment cases

In a shocking revelation, the Treasury Inspector General has identified some 2,500 documents that “potentially” show taxpayer information held by the Internal Revenue Service being shared with President Obama’s White House.

The discovery was revealed to the group Cause of Action, which has sued for access to any of the documents. It charges that the IRS and White House have harassed taxpayers.

In an email from the Justice Department’s tax office, an official revealed the high number of documents, suggesting that the White House was hip deep in probes of taxpayers, likely including conservatives and Tea Party groups associated with the IRS scandal.

Secret Malware in European Union Attack Linked to U.S. and British Intelligence

Complex malware known as Regin is the suspected technology behind sophisticated cyberattacks conducted by U.S. and British intelligence agencies on the European Union and a Belgian telecommunications company, according to security industry sources and technical analysis conducted by The Intercept.

Regin was found on infected internal computer systems and email servers at Belgacom, a partly state-owned Belgian phone and internet provider, following reports last year that the company was targeted in a top-secret surveillance operation carried out by British spy agency Government Communications Headquarters, industry sources told The Intercept.

Frederick Douglass

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.”

Obama Is Damaging Hillary’s Chances

WSJ

President Obama ’s high-risk immigration gamble may have severe consequences for Washington, the country and the Democratic Party, most of all Hillary Clinton .

Mrs. Clinton’s putative bid for the Democratic presidential nomination is already running into trouble. The national exit poll from the recently completed midterm elections showed her with less than a majority of voters (43%) saying she would make a good president. When pitted against an unnamed Republican candidate, Mrs. Clinton lost 40% to 34%.

Those grim numbers followed on a September WSJ/NBC poll showing a plunge in Mrs. Clinton’s favorability rating, to 43%, from 59% in 2009.

Video: FSU Shooting a PR-Media Con Job

As the Florida State University shooting story continues to unfold, more questions emerge on several fronts. The following video examines whether the November 20 shooting was a staged event, complete with repeated “Tweets” from the account of one Blair Stokes, an intern at Tallahassee-based “behavioral change” and “crisis communications” public relations firm SalterMitchell.

The video also makes note of recently-installed FSU President John Thrasher who, as a longtime aggressive Republican Party politico, has close ties to both Florida state politics and major news media. The FSU Board of Trustees appointed Thrasher as FSU President earlier this year despite strong objection of the university’s faculty and students.

Biden's Hotel Bill for Turkey Visit: $625K

Vice President Joe Biden just returned Sunday from a three-nation trip that concluded with a 48 hour visit to Turkey. The vice president, his wife, and his entourage arrived in Turkey via Ukraine Friday evening around 7:30 local time for meetings with President Erdogan and other government officials. Biden departed for Washington, D.C. Sunday after meeting with Patriarch Bartholomew of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The stay in Turkey alone racked up a hotel bill of approximately $624,734.

The notice of the hotel contract was posted online uncharacteristically quickly, appearing on the very day of Biden's departure from Turkey. The documents called for 200 rooms and one large conference room at the Hilton Harbiye in Istanbul:

2 Children Being Tested for Possible Ebola in Ohio

Ohio public health officials are testing two children for the Ebola virus after they developed fevers following a trip to West Africa.

"We have two cases that we're testing," Jose Rodriguez, director of public affairs and communications for the Columbus Public Health Department, said today. "We're not in a panic situation."

Two sisters, ages 4 and 6, were taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus early this morning after they showed signs of a fever, Rodriguez said.

They are being kept in isolation and are receiving supportive care, Rodriguez said. Doctors are also testing the girls for other respiratory illnesses, like influenza and enterovirus D68, Rodriguez said.

In a Shift, Obama Extends U.S. Role in Afghan Combat

NY TIMES

President Obama decided in recent weeks to authorize a more expansive mission for the military in Afghanistan in 2015 than originally planned, a move that ensures American troops will have a direct role in fighting in the war-ravaged country for at least another year.

Mr. Obama’s order allows American forces to carry out missions against the Taliban and other militant groups threatening American troops or the Afghan government, a broader mission than the president described to the public earlier this year, according to several administration, military and congressional officials with knowledge of the decision.

Dutch government refuses to reveal ‘secret deal’ into MH17 crash probe

The Dutch government has refused to reveal details of a secret pact between members of the Joint Investigation Team examining the downed Flight MH17. If the participants, including Ukraine, don’t want information to be released, it will be kept secret.

The respected Dutch publication Elsevier made a request to the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice under the Freedom of Information Act to disclose the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) agreement, along with 16 other documents. The JIT consists of four countries - the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and Ukraine - who are carrying out an investigation into the MH17 disaster, but not Malaysia. Malaysian Airlines, who operated the flight, has been criticized for flying through a war zone.

The rise of the new world order

It would be an understatement to say Tony Abbott’s office was less than impressed with US President Barack Obama’s performance last Saturday in Brisbane.

The caller demanded to know why the Prime Minister’s office had not been given a “heads up” about Obama’s G20 climate change stunt.

After all, that’s what friends do, right? Or in this case don’t do. They don’t blindside them.

The caller, obviously, was a senior staffer from the Tony Abbott’s office and rang to express their displeasure at not being afforded the courtesy of a forewarning that the US President was planning to come to Australia to dump on the PM.

Obama’s speech to a left-stacked university campus in Brisbane has since been portrayed as a defining moment in the climate change debate.

The New World Order of “Neoliberal Globalization”. Russia at the Crossroads

In this keynote article, the present criminal New World Order of neoliberal globalization ― which, through its military and economic violence, has led to despair the majority of the world population for the benefit of a small minority ― is analyzed, in the light of the decisions taken by the latest G20 meeting in Brisbane.

It is shown that the BRICS countries, which subscribed to a communiqué constituting a pure celebration of neoliberal globalization extolling the basic principles on which the NWO is based, have forfeited any right to an alternative pole in a new multipolar world. The only potential exception is Russia which, exactly because of its uneven relationship to this criminal World Order, is presently the main target of the Transnational Elite that runs it.

Traveler from Mali tested for Ebola at New York hospital

(Reuters)

NEW YORK - A traveler from Mali was being tested for Ebola infection on Thursday at Bellevue Hospital, with results expected later in the day, health officials in New York City said.

Due to the patient's symptoms and travel history, the person has been placed in isolation, the officials said in a statement. The officials gave few details about the person.

"An individual who came to the United States from Mali, a country with limited Ebola transmission, was taken to HHC Bellevue Hospital Center today," the statement said.

Mali shares a border with Guinea, one of three West African nations hardest hit by the virus.

Goldman, Fed Employees Busted For Illegally Sharing Confidential Information

On the morning of Friday, September 26, in addition to the shocking news of Bill Gross' departure from Pimco, the world was just as shocked, or not as the case was for many, that a former NY Fed staffer, Carmen Segarra, who had been previously fired for suggesting that Goldman Sachs has an undue influence on the NY Fed and gets a preferential treatment (certainly as a result of NY Fed's president Bill Dudley being working previously at Goldman Sachs), had released nearly 50 hours of tapes confirming her allegations: that the NY Fed was nothing but a branch of the bank that controls every central bank.
